RECALL: 1984 and 1985 Civic Fuel Pump (Supersedes 88-024, dated August 5, 1988)
PROBLEM
When subjected to underhood temperatures and internal pressure over time, some mechanical fuel pumps may eventually develop fuel leakage at the crimped seam between the two fuel pump halves. Since fuel may leak in the engine compartment, there is a small possibility of fire.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the fuel pump, the fuel return and inlet hoses, and the clamps with the new parts included in the set listed under PARTS INFORMATION. Use the procedure outlined in the appropriate year and model service manual.
NOTE:
^ On all models except the Wagon, you must shorten the fuel inlet hose 20 mm (3/4 in.).
^ The fuel pump insulator does not need to be replaced unless it is damaged or deteriorated.
After replacing the fuel pump, center punch a completion mark on the firewall above the fourth character of the VIN.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected cars will be notified of this update by mail. Owners will be asked to contact their nearest Honda dealer for replacement of the fuel pump. (See the back page for the text of the customer letter.)

August, 1988 Recall for Replacement of Fuel Pump Assembly on 1984 and 1985 Honda Civics
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Honda Motor Company, Ltd. has determined that a defect which affects motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1984 and 1985 Honda Civic automobiles. Over time, some mechanical fuel pumps may eventually develop a fuel leak, Since fuel may leak in the engine compartment, there is a small possibility of fire.
Our records show you may own one of these vehicles. If so, please call your Honda dealer and make an appointment with the Service Department to have the fuel pump assembly replaced free of charge. The required parts are now available. Any additional, recall-related work will be done as necessary, free of charge. Although the repair work takes approximately one hour, please plan on leaving your car at your Honda dealership for the day to allow the dealer some flexibility in scheduling other customers.
You are eligible for reimbursement if you experienced this problem and had it repaired at your own expense. Reimbursement is subject to the eligibility requirements given on the enclosed "Request for Reimbursement" form included for your convenience.
If you are not satisfied with the service you receive from your Honda dealer, you may call the Honda Zone office shown in your area of the map on the back side of this letter.
If you believe that American Honda or the dealer has failed to, or is unable to, remedy the defect in your car, free of charge, within a reasonable period of time (60 days from the date you first take your car in for the repair appointment), you may submit a complaint to:
