REAR AXLE BEAM/STABILIZER ASSEMBLY:

1. Remove the stabilizer control arm shown below (you can get to it without removing other parts).
2. Retest the car with the stabilizer control arm off:

- If the noise is still there, follow normal diagnostic procedures to find the cause.

- If the noise is gone, go on to the next step and replace the stabilizer with one of the improved assemblies listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

3. Replace the stabilizer as described in the Civic Service Manual (page 20-23 in the '84 FIRST EDITION, page 20-26 in all others).

NOTE: In step 6 of the Service Manual procedure, use a length of 2" x 2" lumber to tap the stabilizer out of the axle beam, as shown in the drawing above step 5).

Before you install the new stabilizer:

^ Clean out the inside of the axle beam.

^ Make sure the left end of the new stabilizer is clean and dry, then seal it by applying Honda Silicone Liquid Gasket (H/C 172444) to the ends of the splines as shown below.

^ Also apply Silicone Gasket to the axle beam end cap before you reinstall it. If the cap was damaged or distorted during removal, replace it with a new one.

REAR AXLE BEAM/STABILIZER ASSEMBLY:

4. After installing the new stabilizer, torque its bolts and control arm nuts (and the panhard rod bolt and nut, and both trailing arm bolts) to 65 N-m (47 ft.lbs). Cross out the incorrect torque values in your Service Manual (on the Disassembly/Inspection page of the Rear Suspension section) and write in the correct values as shown above.
