Window Glass Markings
PROBLEM

The customer notices markings in the window glass under certain lighting conditions.

PROBABLE CAUSE

Two different markings commonly show up on automotive tempered glass. They are Packaging Stains and Polarization Marks.

Packaging Stains

Corrective Action

These stains appear as "waves" that start from a point on the edge of the glass. They may cover only part of the window, and do not appear in a regular pattern. They show up under natural or fluorescent lighting.

The stains are caused by the packing material used to separate the pieces of glass when they are shipped from the manufacturer to the assembly plant.

Clean the windows with a product called Mag V. (See PARTS INFORMATION.) Thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the glass. Mag V can damage paint and other components, so protect the interior and exterior while using it.

CAUTION: Mag V contains acid. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection, and follow all manufacturer's instructions.

Polarization Marks

Information Only - No Corrective Action

These marks normally appear as rainbow-colored blotches arranged in a regular pattern across the whole window. They show up more often on curved glass. Because they are laminated, the windshield and sunroof do not have these marks.
Polarization marks can be seen best in natural light. They are most obvious at dawn, dusk, and when the car is parked in the shade. They will appear more brilliant when looking through polarized sunglasses.

Polarization marks are a byproduct of the glass tempering process, which causes the glass to polarize reflected light.

No corrective action is possible. Polarization marks appear on all tempered glass, and cannot be eliminated by cleaning or glass replacement.
