Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
EXC. 4WD WAGON
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Release steering lock and place gear shift lever in neutral.
3. Disconnect the following engine compartment electrical connectors:
a. Battery positive cable from starter.
b. Disconnect wiring from starter solenoid.
c. Disconnect electrical connector from temperature gauge sending unit.
d. Disconnect wiring from ignition timing thermosensor.
e. Disconnect wires from back-up light switch.
4. Remove speedometer cable retaining clip. Do not disassemble speedometer gear holder.
5. Disconnect clutch cable at release arm.
6. Remove transmission side starter bolt and top transmission mounting bolt.
7. Raise and support front of vehicle and remove front wheels.
8. Attach a suitable chain hoist to engine, then raise engine just enough to take weight off mounts.
9. Drain transaxle, then reinstall drain plug.
10. Position jack under right lower ball joint, disconnect ball joint from steering knuckle and slowly lower jack to relieve spring tension. Repeat procedure for left ball joint. Ensure jack is positioned securely under lower control arm.
11. Remove engine and right wheel well splash shields.
12. Disconnect and remove exhaust header pipe.
13. Rotate right steering knuckle outward as far as possible, pry right inner constant velocity joint approximately 1/2 inch from transaxle to release spring retainer, then disconnect right driveshaft from transaxle. Do not pull driveshaft from transaxle without first releasing spring retainer as constant velocity joints will be damaged.
14. Disconnect shift lever torque rod from clutch housing.
15. Slide shift rod pin retainer back, drive out pin securing shift rod and disconnect rod from transaxle.
16. Support transaxle with a suitable jack and remove bolts from front transaxle mount and bolts securing engine torque bracket to transaxle.
17. Remove bolts securing rear transaxle bracket to clutch housing and remaining bolts securing transaxle to engine.
18. Separate transaxle from engine until mainshaft clears clutch pressure plate.
19. Pry left inner constant velocity joint approximately 1/2 inch out of transaxle to release spring retainer, then disconnect left driveshaft while lowering transaxle from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
