W/Fuel Injected Engine

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive cable. Remove battery from vehicle.
2. Mark position of hood hinges, disconnect washer hoses, then remove hood.
3. Remove engine and wheel well splash shields.
4. Drain engine oil, then reinstall drain plug using new sealing washer.
5. Drain radiator coolant into a suitable container.
6. Drain transaxle lubricant into a suitable container, then reinstall drain plug with new washer and torque to 29 ft. lbs.
7. Disconnect air intake duct and vacuum hose.
8. Relieve fuel pressure slowly, by loosening the service bolt on the fuel filter approximately one turn. Place a shop towel over the fuel filter to prevent pressurized fuel from spraying over the engine.
9. Disconnect fuel return hose from the pressure regulator, then the special nut and fuel hose.
10. Disconnect engine compartment sub-harness connector, then the engine secondary ground cable.
11. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose.
12. On models equipped with A/C, remove idle control solenoid valve.
13. On all models, remove throttle cable by loosening locknut and throttle cable adjusting nut. To prevent kinking, do not bend throttle cable while removing it. If cable should become kinked, replace it.
14. Disconnect No. 1 control box connector, then lift control box off its mounting and allow it to hang near engine.
15. Disconnect ignition wires at spark plugs, then remove the distributor.
16. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine. Ensure heater valve cable is not disconnected.
17. Loosen clutch cable adjusting nut, then disconnect clutch cable from release arm.
18. Disconnect transmission ground cable, then the shift lever torque rod from the clutch housing.
19. Slide shift rod spring retainer to one side and drive out spring pin using a suitable punch, then disconnect shift rod.
20. Remove speedometer cable attaching clip, then pull speedometer cable out of holder. Ensure speedometer gear does not fall into transmission housing.
21. Remove exhaust header pipe attaching bolts, then the header pipe. Apply suitable penetrating oil to studs to facilitate removal.
22. Remove right and left side ball joint, then pry right and left side CV joint out of transaxle.
23. Attach suitable hoist to engine, then raise engine slightly to remove load on engine mounts.
24. Remove rear transaxle mount bracket, then the front transaxle mount attaching bolts.
25. Remove engine side rubber mount attaching bolt.
26. On models equipped with A/C, proceed as follows:
a. Loosen belt adjusting bolt and idler pulley nut.
b. Remove compressor mounting bolts, then lift compressor out of bracket with hoses attached and wire it aside.
c. Remove lower compressor mounting bracket.
27. On all models, remove alternator.
28. Ensure all connections which would restrict engine removal are removed.
29. Lift engine and transaxle assembly approximately six inches, then repeat step 28.
30. Remove engine and transaxle assembly. After engine removal, coat all machined surfaces with clean engine oil or grease to prevent rust and corrosion. Tie plastic bags over driveshaft ends.

31. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten engine mount bolts in 2 steps using sequence shown in Fig. 3 When tightening engine mounts, ensure bushings are not twisted or offset. Failure to tighten mounts in proper sequence may cause excessive vibration.
b. When installing driveshafts, use new spring clips and ensure driveshafts click into groove into differential.
c. After refilling cooling system, loosen bleed bolt and start engine. Tighten bleed bolt when cooling system trapped air has escaped and coolant begins to flow.
d. Adjust all control cables as required.
