Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect ground cable at battery and at transmission.
2. Release steering lock and place selector lever in neutral.
3. Disconnect engine compartment wiring as follows:
a. Battery positive cable from starter motor.
b. Disconnect wiring from starter solenoid.
c. Disconnect wires from back-up light switch.
4. Release engine sub-wire harness from clamp at clutch housing.
5. On 1984-87 models, disconnect clutch cable at release arm. On 1988 models, disconnect hydraulic line, then remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
6. Remove two upper transmission mounting bolts.
7. Raise and support vehicle.
8. Drain transmission oil, then reinstall drain plug and washer.
9. Remove front wheels.
10. Place suitable jack securely beneath transmission.
11. Remove speedometer drive holder attaching bolt and pull assembly out of transmission.
12. Disconnect shift lever torque rod from clutch housing.
13. Remove bolt from shift rod clevis.
14. Using suitable tools, disconnect tie rod ball joints from steering knuckles.
15. Remove lower arm ball joint bolt from right side lower control arm, disconnect ball joint from knuckle with suitable puller, and remove damper fork bolt.
16. Turn either steering knuckle fully outboard, then, using screwdriver, pry constant velocity joint out approximately 1/2 inch, then pull stub axle out of transmission housing. Repeat procedure on other side.
17. Remove right side radius rod.
18. Remove torque arm bracket bolts from clutch housing.
19. Remove damper bracket from transmission.
20. Remove clutch housing bolts from front transmission mount.
21. Remove clutch housing bolts from rear transmission mounting bracket.
22. Remove clutch cover.
23. Remove starter mounting bolts and the starter.
24. Remove front transmission mounting bolt.
25. Pull transmission away from engine block enough to clear dowel pins, then lower transmission and remove from beneath vehicle.
