RECALL: '88 Civic ECU Replacement
PROBLEM

Some 1988 Honda Civic models equipped with automatic transmissions have been produced with an electronic fuel injection control unit that may cause the idle speed to increase by approximately 550 rpm while the automobile is stopped in gear. Although the vehicle can easily be held stationary with the brakes, the unexpected higher than normal idle could create the potential for loss of control and vehicle crash could occur.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

1. Check for a recall completion mark above the seventh digit of the VIN on the firewall.

^ If there is a recall completion mark, you need to do nothing.
^ If there is a no recall completion mark, proceed to step 2.

2. Install a modified ECU (located under the front passenger's carpet) using the part listed under PARTS INFORMATION. See page 11-11 of the '88 Civic service manual for ECU removal and replacement procedures.

3. Start the engine and observe that the "Check Engine" light goes out. If it does; then the ECU is OK.
