4 Speed Automatic Transaxle


Conditions and possible causes do not apply to all transaxles.

No Drive In Any Range

1. Low fluid level.
2. Defective oil pump.
3. Stuck regulator valve or damaged spring.
4. Servo shaft sticking (Accord).
5. Damaged mainshaft.
6. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
7. Damaged final gear.
8. Torque converter not fully seated causing flex plate to become deformed.
9. Oil pump gear improperly installed.
10. Countershaft one-way clutch improperly installed.

No Drive In Low

1. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
2. Defective one-way clutch.
3. Defective low gear.
4. Defective 1st clutch.
5. Defective 1-2 shift valve.
6. Defective CPC valve.

No Drive In Second

1. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
2. Defective 2nd gear.
3. Defective 2nd clutch.

No Reverse

1. Servo shaft sticking.
2. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
3. Defective reverse gear.
4. Defective 2-3 shift valve.
5. Defective 4th clutch.

Engine Races On Acceleration, Stall Speed High In D3, D4 & 2

1. Low fluid level.
2. Defective oil pump.
3. Stuck regulator valve or damaged spring.
4. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
5. Clogged oil filter.
6. Defective torque converter check valve.

Engine Races On Acceleration, Stall Speed High In D3 & D4

1. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
2. Defective one-way clutch.
3. Defective 1st clutch.

Engine Races On Acceleration, Stall Speed High In 2

1. Shift linkage out of adjustment.
2. Defective 2nd clutch.

Engine Races On Acceleration, Stall Speed Correct

1. High fluid level.
2. Defective 1-2 shift valve.
3. Defective governor valve.
4. Throttle control cable improperly adjusted at transaxle (Accord).

Engine Races On Acceleration, Stall Speed Low

1. Defective oil pump.
2. Throttle cable improperly adjusted at carburetor.
3. Lack of engine power.
4. Defective torque converter one-way clutch.

Engine Vibrates At Idle

1. Defective oil pump.
2. Lack of engine power.
3. Torque converter not fully seated causing flex plate to become deformed.

Upshift Speed Too High

1. Defective governor valve.
2. Throttle control cable improperly adjusted at transaxle.
3. Defective throttle valve A.
4. Defective modulator valve.

Shifts From 1st To 3rd In D3

1. Defective 2-3 shift valve.

Shifts From 1st To 4th In D4

1. Defective 2-3 shift valve.
2. Defective 3-4 shift valve.

All Upshifts Occur Too Soon Or Too Late

1. Defective governor valve.
2. Throttle control cable improperly adjusted at transaxle.
3. Defective throttle valve A.
4. Defective modulator valve.

1-2 Upshift Occurs Too Soon Or Too Late

1. Defective governor valve.
2. Defective 1-2 shift valve.

2-3 Upshift Occurs Too Soon Or Too Late

1. Defective governor valve.
2. Defective 2-3 shift valve.

3-4 Upshift Occurs Too Soon Or Too Late

1. Defective governor valve.
2. Defective 3-4 shift valve.

Harsh 1-2 Upshift

1. Defective 2nd clutch.
2. Defective throttle valve B.
3. Defective 2nd accumulator.
4. Defective 3rd accumulator.
5. Missing 2nd ball check valve.

Harsh 2-3 Upshift

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 3rd accumulator.
3. Defective 2nd orifice control valve.
4. Defective 3rd clutch.
5. Missing 3rd ball check valve.

Harsh 3-4 Upshift

1. Lack of engine power.
2. Defective throttle valve B.
3. Defective 4th accumulator.
4. Defective 3rd orifice control valve.
5. Defective 4th clutch.
6. Missing 4th ball check valve (Accord).

Harsh 2-1 Downshift (Prelude)

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 2nd accumulator.
3. Defective 2nd orifice control valve.
4. Missing 2nd ball check valve.

Harsh 3-2 Downshift

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 3rd accumulator.
3. Defective 3rd orifice control valve.
4. Missing 3rd ball check valve.

Harsh 4-3 Downshift (Prelude)

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 4th accumulator.
3. Missing 4th ball check valve.

Engine Races On 2-3 Upshift (Shift Points OK)

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 3-4 shift valve.
3. Defective 3rd accumulator.
4. Defective 2nd orifice control valve.
5. Clogged main orifice.
6. Clogged 3rd orifice.
7. Defective 3rd clutch.

Engine Races On 3-4 Upshift (Shift Points OK)

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 3-4 shift valve.
3. Defective 4th accumulator.
4. Defective 3rd orifice control valve.
5. Defective 4th clutch.

Engine Vibrates During 2-3 Upshift (Shift Points OK)

1. Defective 2nd clutch.
2. Defective throttle valve B.
3. Defective 3rd accumulator.
4. Clogged 2nd orifice.
5. Missing 3rd ball check valve.
6. Clogged separator port orifice.

Engine Vibrates During 3-4 Upshift (Shift Points OK)

1. Defective throttle valve B.
2. Defective 3rd orifice control valve.
3. Clogged 3rd orifice.
4. Defective 3rd clutch.
5. Missing 4th ball check valve.
6. Clogged separator port orifice.

Vehicle Creeps In Neutral (Shift Cable Properly Adjusted)

1. Defective 1st clutch.
2. Defective 2nd clutch.
3. High fluid level.
4. Defective 3rd clutch.
5. Defective 4th clutch.
6. Burnt needle bearing.
7. Burnt thrust washer.
8. Improper clutch clearance.

Delayed Engagement When Shifting From Neutral To Drive (Shift Cable Properly Adjusted)

1. Defective 1st clutch.
2. Clogged low or 1st orifice.

Delayed Engagement When Shifting From Neutral To Reverse (Shift Cable Properly Adjusted)

1. Servo shaft sticking.
2. Defective 2-3 shift valve.
3. Defective 4th clutch.

Malfunctioning Lock-Up Mechanism

1. Defective lock-up cut valve.
2. Defective lock-up timing valve.
3. Defective lock-up shift valve.

Lock-Up Clutch Engages Or Disengages Abnormally

1. Improperly adjusted throttle control cable at transaxle.
2. Defective throttle valve B.
3. Defective lock-up timing valve.
4. Defective governor cut valve.
5. Defective lock-up shift valve.

Engine Vibrates During Lock-Up Clutch Engagement

1. Defective governor cut valve.
2. Defective lock-up shift valve.
3. Defective lock-up piston and/or damper spring.
4. Defective lock-up control valve.

Lock-Up Clutch Slips

1. Stuck regulator valve or damaged spring.
2. Defective torque converter check valve.
3. Defective lock-up shift control valve.
4. Defective lock-up control valve.
