Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Slide both front seats back fully.
3. Remove center console as follows:
a. Remove access lid from rear console, then the two retaining screws, Fig. 1.
b. Remove two center screws marked "1".
c. Move rear console back slightly, then disconnect power antenna switch connector.
d. Remove retaining screws marked "2" and "4", then carefully lift out front console.
e. Remove retaining screws marked "3", then slide out drink holder and cassette case through back of console.
4. Remove hood release handle being careful not to disconnect cable.
5. Disconnect wiring harnesses at fuse area, Fig. 2.
6. Lower steering column, Fig. 3.
7. On models with lever type heater control, remove as follows:
a. Remove heater control knobs and heater control cover.
b. Remove radio, Fig. 4.
c. Disconnect heater control connectors from inside of instrument panel.
d. Remove four heater control to instrument panel attaching screws, then remove heater control.
8. On models with button type heater control, remove control as follows:
a. Remove radio, Fig. 4.
b. Disconnect heater control connectors from inside of instrument panel.
c. Disconnect cool vent and air mix cables from heater unit.
d. Remove four screws attaching heater control to instrument panel, then the heater control.
9. On all models, remove instrument cluster as follows:
a. Remove each switch from instrument cluster by inserting a thin flat-tip screw driver under the bottom center of each switch and prying it loose. Pull switches straight back and disconnect wire connectors.

b. Remove upper lid and two screws, Fig. 5.
c. Remove four cluster bezel lower attaching screws, then the cluster bezel.
d. Remove four screws securing cluster assembly, pull straight back and disconnect speedometer cable and wire harnesses, Fig. 6.
10. Remove clock Fig. 7, then disconnect antenna cable and ash tray.
11. Remove seven instrument panel mounting bolts, Fig. 8.
12. Lift and pull instrument panel so it slides up and off guide pin at center of dash. Ensure panel does not fall when it slides off guide pin.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Reconnect antenna cable before lifting instrument panel onto guide pin.
b. Ensure that instrument panel fits onto guide pin correctly.
c. Before tightening instrument panel bolts, ensure wires are not pinched and panel does not interfere with heater control lever or cable.
d. When attaching steering column, refer to Fig. 3 for tightening specifications.
