Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then positive cable. Remove battery from vehicle.2. Disconnect washer fluid tube, then remove hood.
3. Drain engine oil, cooling system and transaxle fluid. After draining install engine and transaxle drain plugs with new gaskets.
4. Remove air intake ducts, then remove battery tray.
5. Slowly loosen service bolt on fuel filter approximately one turn to relieve fuel system pressure. Place shop towel around fuel filter to prevent fuel spray and allow fuel to drain into a suitable container.
6. Disconnect wiring harness connectors as necessary to allow engine and transaxle removal.
7. Disconnect ignition wire at spark plugs, then remove distributor cap.
8. Remove distributor to cylinder head retaining bolts, then remove distributor.
9. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle body and mounting bracket.
10. Disconnect fuel pressure and return lines as necessary to allow engine removal.
11. Remove power steering pump from mounting bracket, then using wire suspend from body with pressure and return hoses attached.
12. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses at engine.
13. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle oil cooler lines.
14. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.
15. On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor from mounting bracket, then using wire, suspend from frame with refrigerant hoses attached.
16. On all models, remove alternator.
17. On models with automatic transaxle, remove header pipe and bracket, then remove torque converter cover and cable bracket. Disconnect shift control cable from transaxle lever.
18. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect shift lever torque rod, shift rod and clutch cable.
19. On all models, remove front driveshafts, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints section for procedure.
20. On Civic Wagon with 4 wheel drive, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect shift and select cables from rear of transaxle.
b. Remove three transaxle side mount attaching bolts, then remove mount.
c. Disconnect propeller shaft for rear axle at transaxle companion flange.
21. On all models, support engine using a suitable engine lifting fixture.
22. Remove rear transaxle mounting bracket.
23. Remove bolts from front transaxle mount, engine side mount
24. On models with automatic transaxle, remove bolts from transaxle side mount.
25. On models with manual transaxle, remove mount nut from under transaxle housing, then remove bolt from side of transaxle mount.
26. On all models, check to ensure all linkages, wiring, hoses and lines are disconnected to allow for engine and transaxle removal, then remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
27. Separate engine from transaxle as necessary.

28. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to Fig. 1 for engine mount torque specifications.
b. When installing driveshafts, use new spring clips and ensure driveshafts click into groove into differential.
c. After refilling cooling system, loosen bleed bolt and start engine. Tighten bleed bolt when cooling system trapped air has escaped and coolant begins to flow.
d. Adjust all control cables as required.
