Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection

1. Check whether the fuel pump runs or not. Remove the fuel filler cap, listen closely at the fuel filler port. You should be able to hear the fuel pump run for approx. 2 seconds after the ignition is turned on. If you can hear the pump, turn off the ignition and proceed to step 2. If you cannot hear the fuel pump, turn the ignition off and proceed to step 3.
2. Check fuel pump volume.
a. Disconnect the main relay under the left side of the dash and install a jumper between BLK/YEL (#5) and YEL/BLK (#7).

Main Relay Jumper Wire:

b. Relieve fuel pressure
^ Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Fuel Filter Service Bolt:

^ Use a box end wrench on the 6mm service bolt at the top of the fuel filter, while holding the special banjo bolt with another wrench.
^ Place a rag or shop towel over the 6mm service bolt.
^ SLOWLY loosen the 6mm service bolt one complete turn.
c. After relieving fuel system pressure, tighten service bolt.
d. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the regulator and place an approved container underneath.
e. Turn the ignition switch ON for 10 seconds and measure the amount of fuel flow.

Fuel Pump Volume:

AMOUNT SHOULD BE: 7.8 oz. (230cc) minimum in 10 seconds.
f. If fuel flow is less than 7.8 oz. (230 cc), check the following:
^ Clogged fuel filter
^ Clogged or collapsed fuel line
^ If there is no fuel flow, proceed to step 2

a. Disconnect the main relay under the left side of the dash and install a jumper between BLK/YEL (#5) and YEL/BLK (#7).
3. Disconnect the main relay under the left side of the dash and install a jumper between BLK/YEL (#5) and YEL/BLK (#7).

Main Relay Jumper Wire:

3. Remove the left maintenance access cover in the luggage area.
4. Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
CAUTION: Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF before disconnecting the wires.

Left Maintenance Access Cover:

5. Check that battery voltage is available at the fuel pump connector when the ignition switch is turned ON (positive probe to the YEL/BLK wire, negative probe to the BLK wire).
6. If battery voltage is available, replace the fuel pump.
7. If there is no voltage, see "DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PROCEDURE" under "COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS".
