Transmission

1. Disconnect battery ground cable at battery and transaxle, then on 1989 Prelude disconnect the wiring from the starter motor, lock-up torque converter control solenoids, shift control solenoids and speed pulsar.
2. On all models except 1989 Prelude, release steering lock and shift gear selector to ``N,'' then on 1989 Prelude models with fuel injection, remove the air cleaner case.
3. On all models except 1989 Prelude, disconnect positive battery cable from starter, and the black/white wire from starter solenoid.
4. On all models, disconnect transaxle cooler lines at radiator and plug them.
5. On Accord models, remove starter mounting bolt on transaxle side, and the top transaxle mounting bolt.
6. On Prelude models, remove starter mounting bolts and top transaxle mount bolt.
7. On 1989 Prelude models, remove transmission and block attaching bolts that must be removed from the engine compartment.
8. On all models, loosen front wheel lugs, raise and support vehicle, and remove front wheels.
9. Drain transaxle, then reinstall drain plug and washer, then on 1989 Prelude models, remove the undercarriage splash shield and the center beam.
10. On all models except 1989 Prelude, remove throttle control cable end from throttle lever, then loosen outer locknut only to maintain adjustment and remove cable from bracket.
11. On vehicles less power steering except 1989 Prelude, remove cable clip, then pull speedometer cable out of holder. Do not remove holder as speedometer gear may fall into transaxle housing.
12. On vehicles with power steering, remove power steering speed sensor complete with speedometer cable and hoses.
13. On 1989 Prelude models, remove right radius rod completely, remove right and left drive shafts and the left half shaft.
14. On 1989 Prelude models, remove engine stiffener and torque converter cover, then remove shift cable from transmission.
15. On Accord models, remove transaxle side starter motor mounting bolt and two upper transaxle mounting bolts.
16. On 1989 Prelude models, remove bolts from drive plate.
17. On all models, place suitable jack under transaxle and secure transaxle to jack.
18. Remove subframe center beam and, on Prelude, splash pan.
19. On all models except 1989 Prelude, remove ball joint pinch bolt from right side lower control arm, then, using suitable puller, disconnect ball joint from knuckle.
20. On all models except 1989 Prelude, turn right side steering knuckle fully outboard, then, using screwdriver, pry constant velocity joint out approximately 1/2 inch and pull joint out of transaxle housing. Do not pull on driveshaft or knuckle, pull on inboard constant velocity joint only.
21. On Accord models, remove engine side starter motor mounting bolt and remove starter motor by lowering through chassis.
22. On 1989 Prelude models, remove lower bolt from rear engine mounting bracket, then loosen but do not remove the top bolt. This will support the weight of the engine. Remove the remaining engine to transmission mounting bolts.
23. On 1989 Prelude models, separate the transmission from the engine block and lower from the chassis.
24. On all models except 1989 Prelude models, remove transaxle damper bracket located in front of torque converter cover plate.
25. Remove torque converter cover plate.
26. Remove center console and shift indicator.
27. Remove lock pin from adjuster and shift cable.
28. Remove both bolts and pull shift cable out of housing.
29. Remove torque converter assembly from drive plate.
30. Remove three rear engine mounting bolts from transaxle housing, then remove rear engine mount.
31. On Prelude models, remove two front transaxle mount attaching bolts.
32. On all models, remove lower transaxle mounting bolt.
33. Pull transaxle away from engine enough to clear dowel pins, then pry left side constant velocity joint out approximately 1/2 inch.
34. Pull transaxle out and lower on jack.
35. Remove torque converter from transaxle.
36. Reverse procedure to install.
