A/C Compressor Pick-up Sensor Set Replacement
PROBLEM

Defective A/C compressor pick-up sensor.

UNITS AFFECTED

^ Preludes up to VIN JHMBA4...LC026715.

^ A/C Kits in your stock.

^ Sanden Compressors in your stock.

DIAGNOSIS

For Preludes up to the VIN listed:

If the A/C system is not working or if the warning light comes on a few seconds after the compressor cycles, measure resistance between the # 1 (GRN wire) and the # 3 (WHT wire) terminals of the compressor at the connector. If the resistance is not between 365 - 445 ohms at 20~ C (68~ F), go to CORRECTIVE ACTION.
For A/C Kits in your stock:

Check the A/C Kit box for a blue dot by the part number.

Blue dot: the replacement sensor set is in the box but needs to be installed on the compressor. (See NOTE below.)

No blue dot: check the A/C Kit number.

- If below PS005827: order a sensor set, see PARTS INFORMATION, and install it.

- If above PS005827: the replacement sensor set is already on the compressor.

For Sanden Compressors in your stock:

Check the compressor serial number.

Below 0319518: order a replacement sensor set, see PARTS INFORMATION, and install it on the compressor. (See NOTE below.)

NOTE: You will need a VIN for the warranty claim. Install the sensor when you are installing the A/C system in a car and use the car's VIN for the warranty claim.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

1. Evacuate the system using UL-listed recovery/recycling equipment.

See Service Bulletin 89-004, issued 5-11-90, Required Special Tools, Equipment and Service Manuals.

NOTE: Do not allow the refrigerant to escape into the atmosphere. The chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) in the refrigerant destroy the ozone layer. For more information refer to the June 90 Service News.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3. Remove the air filter box.

4. Disconnect the suction and discharge hoses from the compressor.

NOTE: Cap the compressor openings and hose ends immediately to prevent contamination.

5. Remove the upper pick-up sensor bolt.

6. Loosen the thermal protector bolt using an 8 mm flex socket, and move the bracket away from the thermal protector.

7. Disconnect the clutch wire.

8. Remove the thermal protector by prying it up with a small screwdriver. Remove any old silicone sealant from the thermal protector cup.

9. Raise the vehicle.

10. Remove the splash shield.

11. Disconnect the four pin connector and remove the lower sensor bolt using a 10 mm socket. Then, pull out the pick up sensor.

12. Install the replacement sensor set.

^ Lubricate the new thermal protector with silicone sealant.

^ Replace the O-rings with new ones.

13. Reinstall the other components and recharge the air conditioning system.
