Engine Removal
WARNING:- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to the correct positions on the engine.
- Apply parking brake and block rear wheels, so the car will not roll off stands and fall while you are working under it.
CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Unspecified items are common for the M/T cars, A/T cars and the A/C equipped cars.
- Unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the coupler and connector portion to avoid damage.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure they do not connect other wiring or hoses or interfere with other parts.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft radio, be sure to get the five digit code from the customer BEFORE disconnecting the battery. Failure to do this may render the radio inoperative.
Under-Hood Components:
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal. Remove the battery.
2. Fix the engine hood in a vertical position. Do not remove the hood.
Splash Shield Removal:
3. Remove the engine splash shield.
4. Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.. Torque to 45 Nm (4.5 kg-m, 33 lb ft).
CAUTION: Do not overtighten the drain plug.
5. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator into a clean pan so it may be reused. Remove the radiator cap to speed draining.
WARNING! Use care when removing the radiator cap to avoid scalding by hot engine coolant or steam.
6. Drain transmission oil or fluid. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
Manual Transmission Oil Drain Plug Torque: 40 Nm (4.0 kg-m, 29 lb ft)
Automatic Transmission Oil Drain Plug Torque: 50 Nm (5.0 kg-m, 36 lb ft)
Engine Compartment Components:
7. Remove the intake air duct and air cleaner housing.
8. Remove the battery base.
Fuel Pressure Release:
9. Relieve fuel pressure by slowly loosening the service bolt on the fuel pipe about one turn.
WARNING! Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame away from work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.
CAUTION:
- Before disconnecting any fuel line, the fuel pressure should be relieved as described above.
- Place a shop towel over the fuel filter to prevent pressurized fuel from spraying over the engine.
10. Remove the fuel feed hose from fuel rail.
11. Remove the fuel return hose from the fuel pressure regulator.
12. Disconnect two connectors and remove the control box from the fire wall.
NOTE: Do not disconnect the vacuum hoses.
13. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the charcoal canister.
14. Disconnect the charcoal canister hose from throttle body.
15. Remove the ground cable from transmission.
Engine Compartment Components:
16. Remove the throttle cable by loosening the locknut, then slip the cable end out of the throttle bracket and accelerator linkage.
NOTE: Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace a kinked cable with a new one.
17. Disconnect the connector and the vacuum hose, then remove the cruise control actuator.
18. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
19. Disconnect the three engine wire harness connectors from the main wire harness at right side of engine compartment, and remove the engine wire harness terminal and the starter cable terminal from the under-hood fuse/relay box and clamps. Then remove the transmission ground terminal.
20. Disconnect the two engine wire harness connectors from main wire harness and the resistor at the left side of the engine compartment.
21 Remove the engine ground wire from cylinder head cover and power steering pump bracket.
Power Steering Pump Removal:
22. Remove the mounting bolt, nut and V-belt from the power steering pump, then remove the bolts and pipe. Loosen the adjusting bolt. Pull the pump away from the mounting bracket.
NOTE:
- Plug the pipe and the pump port.
- Do not disconnect the hose.
AC Compressor Removal:
23. Remove the mounting bolts and V-belt from the air conditioning compressor, then without disconnecting the hoses, pull the compressor away from the mounting bracket.
Hose Locations:
24. Disconnect the heater inlet hose from the cylinder head and the heater outlet hose from the connecting pipe.
Radiator Removal:
25. Disconnect the hoses and connectors to remove the radiator assembly.
- Upper and lower radiator hoses
- Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler hoses
- Cooling fan motor connectors
Speed Sensor:
26. Remove speed sensor.
NOTE: Do not disconnect the hoses or the connector.
Exploded View:
27. Remove the center beam.
28. Remove the exhaust pipe A self-locking nuts and bracket mounting bolts.
29. Remove the ball joints from the tie-rod ends and suspension lower arms.
30. Remove the driveshafts.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION-EQUIPPED CARS:
31. Remove the clutch release hose from the clutch damper on the transmission housing.
32. Remove the shift cable and the select cable with the cable bracket from the transmission.
NOTE: Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace a kinked cable with a new one.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION-EQUIPPED CARS:
33. Remove the engine stiffener, then remove the torque convertor cover.
34. Remove the cable holder, then remove the shift control lever bolt and shift control cable.
NOTE: Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace a kinked cable with a new one.
35. Attach a chain hoist to the engine. Raise the hoist to remove all slack from the chain.
Engine Mounts:
36. Remove the rear engine mounting bolt.
37. Remove the front engine mounting bolt.
38. Remove the side transmission mount and mounting bolt.
39. Remove the side engine mount and mounting bolt.
40. Check that the engine/transaxle is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses, and electric wires.
41. Slowly raise the engine approximately 150 mm (6 in).
NOTE: Check once again that all hoses and wires have been disconnected from the engine/transaxle.
42. Raise the engine/transaxle all the way and remove it from the car.
43. Remove the insulator from the rear beam.
