Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Remove air cleaner case complete with intake hose.
3. Disconnect and remove starter motor, transmission grounds and back-up lamp switch.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable. Do not disassemble speedometer gear holder.
5. Disconnect clutch cable at release arm.
6. Disconnect and remove distributor.
7. Raise and support vehicle.
8. Drain transmission fluid.
9. Remove engine and right wheelwell splash shield.
10. Remove header pipe and bracket.
11. Support lower control arm, then remove lower control arm ball joint nut.
12. Separate lower control arm ball joint and lower control arm. Ensure lower control arm is properly supported.
13. Remove right hand radius arm.
14. Remove driveshafts.
15. On 4WD models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove the propeller shaft.
b. Remove the intermediate shaft.
c. Remove cable bracket from rear transmission mount bracket.
16. On all models, remove shift lever torque rod and shift rod from clutch housing.

17. Attach a chain to the engine, then lift slightly to unload mounts,Fig. 5.
18. Support transmission with a suitable jack and raise to take weight off mounts.
19. On 4WD models, remove side transmission mount bracket.
20. On all models, remove rear transmission mount bracket.
21. Remove side transmission mount.
22. Remove transmission bolts.
23. Pull transmission until it clears the clutch.
24. Separate mainshaft from clutch then lower transmission.
25. Reverse procedure to install.
