Seat Belt Systems: Description and Operation

The front seats are equipped with automatic shoulder seat belts. The shoulder seat belt retractor installed on each front seat, is designed to lock in the event of a sudden stop or deceleration. When a door is opened or the shoulder buckle motor is operating, a solenoid in each shoulder seat belt retractor is energized, disabling the shoulder seat belt retractors and permitting free movement of the shoulder seat belt. In the same way, when the ignition switch is OFF, the shoulder seat belt retractor is unlocked for 3 minutes after the door is closed.
