Computers and Control Systems: Adjustments



1. Start engine and run to operating temperature (cooling fan comes on).
2. Turn off engine.

Tachometer Connection:






3. Connect a tachometer as shown.

EACV And Connector:






4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the EACV.

Idle Adjustment Screw:






5. With accelerator pedal slightly depressed, start the engine and stabilize engine speed to 1000 rpm. Slowly release the pedal until the engine idles. With all accessories off, idle speed should be:

550 ±50 rpm (trans. in neutral of park)

Adjust the idle speed by turning the idle adjusting screw.
6. Turn off engine.
7. Reconnect the electrical connector to the EACV.
8. Remove the "CLOCK" fuse in the under-hood relay box for 10 seconds to reset the ECU.
9. Restart engine and run for one minute at idle speed with accessories off.
Idle speed should be:

700 ±50 RPM (trans. in neutral or park)

Note: (Canada) Be sure headlights are off. Set hand brake and start engine.

10. Idle engine for one minute with headlights (Hi beam) and rear defogger ON. Idle speed should be:

770 ±50 RPM (trans. in neutral or park)

11. Turn off head lights and rear defogger. Turn on air conditioner and heater fan switch (Hi) and idle for one minute. Idle should be:

770 ±50 RPM (trans. in neutral or park)

12. If idle speed is out of specifications, see COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS for testing of idle control system.
13. Disconnect the tachometer.
