Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Start the engine and allow it to warm up (cooling fan comes on).

Service Check Connector:

2. Locate the service check connector behind the center console. Fit a jumper wire between the BLU/WHT and BRN/WHT terminals.
3. Connect a tachometer and check engine idle speed with all accessories OFF. Idle should be:

700 ± 50 RPM (trans in neutral or park)

If outside specifications, see IDLE SPEED.

4. Remove the rubber cap from the inspection window of the cylinder block.

Checking Ignition Timing:

5. Connect a timing light to the No.1 ignition wire and check the timing at the flywheel mark.

Fig. 113 Timing Marks:

6. Adjust the ignition timing, if necessary, to the following specification:

15 ± 2° BTDC (red mark)
at 700 ±50 RPM (trans. in neutral or park)

7. To adjust the timing, loosen the distributor adjusting bolts and turn the distributor housing counterclockwise to advance the timing, or clockwise to retard the timing.
8. Tighten the adjusting bolts and recheck the timing and idle speed.
9. Remove the jumper wire and install the rubber cap to the inspection window. Disconnect the timing light and tachometer.
