Starting System: Description and Operation

Voltage is applied at all times from the positive battery terminal to the ignition switch and the normally open starter solenoid contacts. When you turn the ignition switch to START and the neutral position switch (A/T) or the clutch interlock switch (M/T) is closed, voltage is applied to the starter solenoid coils. The starter motor gear then engages the flywheel (or drive plate) ring gear and cranks the engine.
