Rear Seat-back Won't Unlatch

SYMPTOM

The rear seat-back cannot be unlatched with the key or by pulling the loop in the trunk.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The release lever on the latch assembly is bent.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the rear seat latch assembly with the new assembly listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

1. Unlatch the rear seat-back and tilt it forward. The release lever on the latch may be bent downward, preventing the seat from unlatching. If so, push the lever upward while releasing the seat-back.





2. Remove the trim panel on the front of the rear shelf by squeezing the clips with a pair of pliers.





3. Unsnap the plastic clip and remove the lock rod from the latch assembly.

4. Remove the two bolts and the latch assembly.

5. Install the new latch assembly with the original bolts. Torque the bolts to 10 N-m (1.0 kg-m, 7.2 lb.ft.).

6. Reinstall the lock rod in the release lever.

7. Install the trim panel.

8. Check the lock cylinder and release loop for smooth operation.

NOTE:
Because the seat-back fits tightly against the side panels, it will not pop forward when it releases. You must rotate the key and hold it, or pull the loop and hold it, and move the seat-back away from the rear shelf.
