Popping Noise From the Exhaust
(Supersedes 93-031, dated August 6, 1993)
SYMPTOM
A loud, metallic, popping noise from the exhaust system after accelerating or when coming to a stop.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Insufficient clearance between the heat shield and the "B" pipe.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
[NEW] Install a washer at each of the two clamps inside the heat shield.
1. Raise the car on a lift.
2. Remove the two nuts and bolts from the left side of the heat shield.
3. Inspect the "B" pipe heat shield for cracks; replace it if necessary.
4. At each location, use a flat tip screwdriver to spread apart the flanges of the clamp, and install a washer (see PARTS INFORMATION) as shown.
5. Reinstall the two nuts and bolts. Torque the bolts to 12 N-m (1.2 kg-m, 9 lb.ft.).
6. Test drive the car to confirm that the noise has been eliminated.
