Loose Front Speaker Cover

(Supersedes 92-051, dated December 18, 1992)

SYMPTOM

The front speaker cover is loose and sometimes falls off as the door is closed.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The speaker cover does not fit well on the door liner.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Modify the door liner, and install speaker clips to hold the speaker cover (see PARTS INFORMATION).

Ohio production:
Up to VIN 1 HGEG8. . . PL00628O, remove both tabs and install two clips. Above that VIN, remove only the top tab and install one clip.

Japan production:

Remove both tabs and install two clips in all cases.

1. Gently pull up and out on the bottom of the loose speaker cover, and remove it.

2. Locate the two raised tabs on the inside of the plastic door liner. This is the area where the existing clips on the speaker cover attach.

3. Using a felt-tip pen, mark the door liner at each end of the raised tabs. These marks are for reference when installing the new speaker clips.

4. Using a small flat-tip screwdriver, separate the vinyl from the plastic door liner between the marks you made. Be careful that you don't cut or damage the vinyl when separating it from the door liner.

5. Using a box cutter, remove the tabs flush with the door liner.

6. Install the new speaker clips under the vinyl on the door liner between the marks you made. The flat side of the clip should be toward the vinyl, and the top should not stick up more than 2 mm into the speaker opening.

Note
If the vinyl was not properly separated from the door liner in step 4, there will be a visible wrinkle on the door liner.

7. Install the speaker cover by inserting the rear and top first, then snap the bottom into place.

8. Inspect the vinyl liner for wrinkles or any signs of damage.

9. Repeat steps 1-8 on the other side if the speaker cover is loose.
