Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair

1. If the compressor is marginally operable, run the engine at idle speed and turn the air conditioner fan on for a few minutes, then shut the engine off and disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Recover the refrigerant, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Service and Repair.
3. Disconnect the condenser fan 2P connector.

Condenser Fan Shroud Removal:

4. Loosen the lower mounting bolt, and remove the two upper mounting bolts and condenser fan shroud.

Suction And Discharge Line Removal:

5. Remove the bolt and nut, and disconnect the suction line and discharge line from the compressor.

CAUTION: Cap the open fittings immediately to keep moisture out of the system.

Power Steering Belt Removal:

6. Remove the power steering pump belt.
7. Loosen the through bolt and adjustment locknut, then turn the adjusting bolt and remove the belt.
8. Disconnect the compressor clutch 1P connector.

A/C Compressor Removal:

9. Remove the four mounting bolts and compressor.

Heat Insulator Removal:

10. If necessary, remove the two mounting bolts and the heat insulator.

Compressor Bracket Removal:

11. If necessary, remove the two mounting bolts and nuts, then remove the compressor bracket.
12. Install in the reverse order of removal, and:
- If you're installing a new compressor, drain all the refrigerant oil out of the old compressor and measure its volume. Subtract the volume of old oil from 120 cc (4 fl oz); the result is the amount of oil you should drain from the new compressor (through the suction fitting).
- Replace 0-rings with new ones at each fitting, and apply a thin coat refrigerant oil before installing them.

NOTE: Be sure to use the right 0-rings for R-134a to avoid leakage.

- Use (SP-10: P/N 38899-P13-003) oil for R-134a Sanden spiral type compressors only.
- Do not return the oil to the container once dispensed and never mix with other refrigerant oils to avoid contamination.
- Immediately after using the oil, replace the cap on the container and seal it to avoid moisture absorption.
- Do not spill the refrigerant oil on the car; it may damage the paint; if the refrigerant oil contacts the paint, wash it off immediately.
- Do not damage the condenser fins when removing/installing the compressor.
- Adjust compressor belt tension, refer to Adjustments/Compressor Belt.
- Adjust the power steering pump belt, refer to Engine/Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories/Drive Belt/Power Steering/Adjustments.
- Charge the system, refer to System Charging.
- Test the system performance, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.
