Engine: Service and Repair

1. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Secure hood as wide open as possible.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive cable.
4. Remove battery and base, then the engine ground cable.
5. Remove throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening locknuts and slipping cable ends out of throttle linkage. Adjust throttle cable when installing. Do not loosen adjusting nut. Do not bend cable. Always replace a kinked cable.
6. Remove intake air duct B, then the intake air duct/air cleaner housing assembly.
7. Disconnect intake air resonator (IAR) control solenoid valve connector, then remove vacuum hose and IAR.
8. Remove battery cables from under-hood fuse/relay box and under-hood ABS fuse/relay box.
9. Remove engine wire harness connectors on right side of engine compartment, then the brake booster vacuum hose and engine vacuum hoses.
10. Relieve fuel pressure as described under Technician Safety Information.
11. Remove fuel feed and return hoses.
12. Remove engine wire harness connectors, terminal and clamps on left side of engine compartment.
13. Remove injector resistor connector on left side of engine compartment, then the vacuum hoses and power steering hose clamp.
14. Remove mounting nuts and adjusting bolt, then the power steering pump belt and pump. Do not disconnect power steering hoses.
15. Loosen alternator mounting bolt, nut and adjusting bolt, then remove alternator belt.
16. On models equipped with manual transaxle, perform the following:
a. Remove shift cable and select cable. Do not bend cable. Always replace a kinked cable.
b. Disconnect back-up light switch connectors and starter motor cable, then remove clutch slave cylinder and pipe/hose assembly.
17. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor connector, then remove radiator cap.
18. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels and splash shield.
19. Drain engine coolant, then the transaxle oil or fluid. Reinstall transaxle oil drain plug using new washer.
20. Drain engine oil. Reinstall drain plug using new washer. Do not tighten drain plug.
21. Lower vehicle, then remove upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses.
22. Remove Automatic Transaxle Fluid (ATF) cooler hoses, then the radiator assembly.
