Automatic Transmission Shifting Problems
SYMPTOM
Harsh or rough shifting, or shifts are delayed.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The throttle control cable is not adjusted properly.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
Canadian-production only:
3-door - thru VIN 2HGEH.4..RH509826
2-door - thru VIN 2HGEJ.2..RH525172
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Adjust the throttle control cable.
1. Warm the engine up to normal operating temperature. Verify that the idle speed is correct (refer to service manual page 11-114).
2. Verify that the throttle cable has the proper free play.
3. Verify that the throttle plate is fully closed.
4. Loosen the throttle control cable locknuts at the throttle body end. Make sure there is slack in the cable and the throttle control lever on the transmission is not being held open.
5. Push and hold the throttle control lever fully closed. Remove the free play from the cable by tightening the locknut by hand.
6. Secure the cable in position by tightening both locknuts; make sure the cable still has no free play.
7. Have an assistant depress the accelerator pedal. Make sure the throttle linkage works correctly, and that the throttle control lever is synchronized with the throttle movement.
8. Test drive the car to verify that the symptom has disappeared.
