Ignition Timing Control

PURPOSE

The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the Ignition timing in order to obtain the best balance of power, economy and low emissions.

OPERATION

The Engine Control Module ECM contains "data maps" for basic ignition timing at various engine speeds and manifold pressures. Ignition timing is also adjusted for coolant temperature. A Knock Control System is also used. When detonation is detected by the knock sensor, the ignition timing is retarded.
