Fuel Tank: Service and Repair
WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame away from your work area.1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
a. Disconnect the negative battery cable (retain code for radio first).
b. Remove the fuel tank fill cap.
c. Use a box end wrench on the 6mm service bolt at the top of the fuel filter, while holding the special banjo bolt with another wrench.
2. Block front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support with jackstands.
Fuel Tank Removal:
3. Remove the drain bolt and drain the fuel into an approved container.
4. Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield.
WARNING: Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF before disconnecting the wires.
5. Remove the interior trim panels and fuel tank access panel, disconnect the fuel gauge and fuel pump connectors.
6. Remove the fuel feed line and return hose, then remove the fuel hose protector.
7. Disconnect all hoses.
CAUTION: When disconnecting the hoses, slide the clamps back out of the way, then twist the hoses as you pull them back to avoid damaging them.
8. Place a jack, or other support device, under the tank.
9. Remove the strap nuts and let the straps fall free.
10. Remove the fuel tank.
NOTE: The tank may stick to the undercoat applied to its mount. To remove, CAREFULLY pry it off the mount.
11. To install, replace the washer on the drain bolt, then reverse the above procedure.
