Transmission
1. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.2. Disconnect battery cables from battery, then remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove starter motor cables and holder, then transaxle ground cable from transaxle hanger.
4. Disconnect lock-up control solenoid and vehicle speed sensor connectors, then remove transmission housing mounting and rear engine mounting bolts.
5. Drain transaxle fluid, reinstall plug with new washer and torque to 36 ft. lbs., then separate ball joints from lower arms.
6. Remove right strut fork bolts, then separate strut forks and lower arm.
7. Remove driveshafts, cover ends and coat precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil.
8. Remove splash shield, then exhaust pipe.
9. Remove shift cable cover and shift cable. Do not bend shift cable.
10. Remove stopper mount, then throttle cable from control lever.
11. Remove ATF cooler hoses from joint pipes and turn up to prevent ATF leakage, then engine stiffeners and torque converter cover.
12. Remove rear engine stiffener.
13. Rotate crankshaft pulley and remove eight drive plate bolts one at a time.
14. Attach suitable lifting device to engine, then lift engine slightly.
15. Place jack under transaxle and raise transaxle enough to take weight off mounts.
16. Remove transaxle side mount, housing mounting and rear engine mounting bolts.
17. Pull transaxle away from engine enough to clear dowel pins, then lower jack and remove transaxle from vehicle.
18. Flush ATF cooler.
19. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. After attaching transaxle to engine, install two transaxle housing bolts and torque to 43 ft. lbs., then install two rear engine mounting bolts and torque to 61 ft. lbs.
b. Install side mount and torque nuts to 54 ft. lbs. and bolt to 47 ft. lbs., then install remaining housing bolts and torque to 43 ft. lbs., and remaining rear engine mounting bolts and torque to 61 ft. lbs.
c. Rotate crankshaft and torque drive plate bolts to 4.5 ft. lbs., then final torque bolts to 9 ft. lbs. in crisscross pattern. Ensure crankshaft rotates freely after tightening last bolt.
d. Ensure driveshaft spring clips engage side gears and starter cable ring terminal crimped side faces out.
e. Torque stopper mount bolts nuts to 47 ft. lbs.; engine stiffener to transaxles bolts to 33 ft. lbs.; stopper mount throttle control drum bolts to 28 ft. lbs.; engine stiffener to engine bolts to 17 ft. lbs.; shift cable cover bolt to 16 ft. lbs.; and shift cable bolt to 10 ft. lbs.
f. Torque strut nuts to 47 ft. lbs.; exhaust pipe to manifold and castle nuts to 40 ft. lbs.; strut pinch bolts to 32 ft. lbs.; exhaust pipe flange nuts to 16 ft. lbs.; exhaust pipe mounting nut to 12 ft. lbs.; and starter cable mounting nuts to 6.5 ft. lbs.
