Engine: Service and Repair

1. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Remove engine hood support struts, then place engine hood in a vertical position.
3. Disconnect battery, then remove battery, base, bracket and engine ground cable.
4. Remove intake air duct, then remove throttle cable and cruise control cable. Do not bend cable when removing. Tag all cables and hoses for installation reference.
5. Remove starter cable from strut brace, then remove strut brace.
6. Disconnect engine wiring harness electrical connectors on left side of engine compartment, then disconnect injector resistor electrical connector on left side of engine compartment.
7. Relieve fuel pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information, then remove fuel feed hose from fuel filter.
8. Remove brake booster vacuum hose, evaporative emission (EVAP) control canister hose and fuel return hose, then remove vacuum hoses.
9. Remove battery cables from fuse/relay box and ABS fuse/relay box.
10. Disconnect engine wiring harness electrical connectors on right side of engine compartment, then remove side engine mount.
11. Loosen idler pulley center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor belt.
12. Remove ground cable.
13. Loosen alternator mounting bolt, nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the alternator belt.
14. Loosen mounting nuts and adjusting nut, then remove power steering pump belt.
15. Disconnect inlet hose from power steering pump, then plug hose and pump.
16. Remove mounting nuts and adjusting nut, then remove power steering pump.
17. Remove radiator cap. Do not remove radiator cap when engine is hot.
18. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels and splash shield.
19. Drain engine coolant, then loosen drain plug in radiator.
20. Drain automatic transmission fluid (ATF), then reinstall drain plug using a new washer. Do not overtighten drain bolt.
21. Remove center beam.
22. Disconnect front heated oxygen sensor connector, then remove exhaust pipe A.
23. Remove crankshaft pulley, then remove oil pressure switch terminal and oil filter base.
24. Remove shift cable, then remove damper fork.
25. Disconnect suspension lower arm ball joints, then remove driveshafts.
26. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses, then heater hoses.
27. Remove ATF cooler hoses, then plug pipes and hoses.
28. Remove radiator, then remove A/C compressor. Do not disconnect A/C hoses.
29. Remove transmission mount, then remove front mount from front beam.
30. Disconnect vacuum hose from engine mount control solenoid valve.
31. Remove rear mount from rear beam.
32. Attach suitable hoist, then remove engine from vehicle.

33. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten engine mounts to specifications, Fig. 3.
