Body Gusset - Squeak From Rear Seat Area

Squeak From the Rear Seat Area
(Replaces 96-062, dated December 9, 1996)

SYMPTOM

A squeaking sound is heard when driving over bumps or turning into driveways. The sound seems to be coming from the rear suspension.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The bolts that mount the gussets in the rear of the car are loose or dry.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Lubricate and tighten the gusset mounting bolts.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Honda Multipurpose Grease:

P/N 08732-0003, H/C 2962629

In warranty:
The normal warranty applies.

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Fold down both sections of the rear seat.

2. Have an assistant drive into and out of a driveway as you listen for the squeak.

^ If the squeak is coming from the area of one of the gussets, continue to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

^ If the squeak is coming from another area, troubleshoot other causes of the squeak.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Fold down the rear seat on the side you need to repair.





2. Sedan only: Remove the seat side bolster.





3. Coupe only: Remove the two clips and move the side trim panel out of the way.

4. Pull back the trunk side trim panel.





5. Remove the three gusset mounting bolts.

6. Clean the threads on the bolts and the bolt holes.

7. Lubricate the bolt threads with Honda multipurpose grease.

8. Reinstall the bolts. Torque them to 10 Nm (7.2 lb-ft).

9. Reinstall all removed parts.
