SYMPTOM
A growling or whining noise from the rear wheel bearings. The pitch changes with vehicle speed and is not affected by road surface conditions.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Water contamination in the rear hub bearing assemblies.

Replace both rear hub bearing assemblies and spindle nuts.

DIAGNOSIS
While test-driving the vehicle at a steady speed above 35 mph, transfer the weight of the vehicle to the left and the right several times. To do this, move the steering wheel back and forth from the 11 o'clock position to the 1 o'clock position. A defective wheel bearing will make more noise when weight is transferred to it.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Refer to the 1998-00 Accord Service Manual and replace both rear hub bearing assemblies and spindle nuts.
