Removal
NOTE: The radio may have a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to obtain the customer's code number before:- Disconnecting the battery.
- Removing the No.43 fuse (7.5 A, underhood fuse/relay box).
- Removing the radio.
After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on. When the word "CODE" is displayed, enter the customer's 5-digit code to restore operation.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first, then the positive (+) cable from the battery.
2. Drain transmission oil.
3. Remove the battery, battery base, and battery base bracket.
4. Remove the intake air duct and air cleaner housing.
5. Remove the vacuum tank and bracket.
6. Remove the harness clamp.
7. Disconnect the backup light switch connectors.
8. Disconnect the starter cables, and transmission ground cable.
9. Remove the oil cooler line bracket bolt if equipped with Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS).
10. Remove the two mounting bolts, then remove the starter.
11. Remove the clutch hose joint, clutch line, and slave cylinder assembly.
CAUTION:
- Do not operate the clutch pedal once the clutch slave cylinder has been removed.
- Use care to avoid damage to the clutch line.
12. Shift the transmission into reverse.
13. First remove the cable bracket, then disconnect the cables from the levers.
CAUTION:
- Use care to avoid damage to the cables.
- Use care to avoid damage to the guide pipe when removing the cables.
14. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
15. Remove the clutch damper bracket, then support it with a piece of wire.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect the clutch lines.
16. Remove the front wheels.
17. Remove the splash shield.
18. Disconnect the primary Heated Oxygen Sensor (primary HOS2) connector.
19. Remove the exhaust pipe A.
20. Remove the center beam.
21. Remove the RH radius rod.
22. Remove the cotter pins, and loosen the castle nuts, then separate the lower ball joints and lower arms on both sides.
23. Remove the damper fork bolts,then separate the damper fork and lower arm.
24. Pry both driveshafts from the differential or away from the ATTS unit.
25. Pull on the inboard joint, then remove both driveshafts.
CAUTION: Coat all the precision surfaces with clean engine oil or grease. Tie bags over the driveshaft ends.
26. Remove the ATTS unit (if equipped).
27. Remove the outer and inner extension shafts, or intermediate shaft.
NOTE: Use care to avoid damaging the seal.
28. Remove the engine stiffener.
29. Place a jack under the transmission, and raise the transmission just enough to relieve the tension from the mounts.
30. Remove the transmission mount, and mount bracket.
31. Remove the transmission mount stud bolt from the transmission housing.
32. Remove the two upper transmission mounting bolts.
33. Remove the three rear engine mount bracket mounting bolts.
34. Remove the three lower transmission mounting bolts.
35. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the mainshaft, then lower it on the transmission jack.
CAUTION: Use care to avoid damage to the clutch line.
