Transmission Bangs in Reverse
SYMPTOM
With reverse gear already selected, the transmission bangs when the vehicle starts to move backward or when the vehicle is accelerated (torque is applied to the transmission).
PROBABLE CAUSE
The reverse selector is not fully engaged into the countershaft reverse gear.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the transmission with a remanufactured unit.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
Refer to the Flat Rate Manual.
DIAGNOSIS
1. Interview the customer to determine the type of noise, and exactly when it happens. The following are considered normal and do not require any transmission repair:
^ Noise when putting the transmission into reverse or taking it out of reverse with the vehicle stopped and the brakes applied.
^ Noise when the vehicle is moving in reverse and the accelerator pedal is released.
2. If, from the customer's description, you determine the noise is not normal, test-drive the vehicle to further diagnose the conditions that cause it. If necessary, compare it to another vehicle.
^ If the transmission bangs when the vehicle starts to move in reverse, or when it is accelerated in reverse, install a remanufactured transmission.
^ If the noise happens under conditions different from above, or the noise is not a bang, troubleshoot other causes (CV joint, etc.).
