Warranty Extension: Secondary and Third Heated Oxygen Sensors
BACKGROUND
American Honda is extending the warranty on the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors to 8 years from the original date of purchase or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state's law.
NOTE:
Before replacing the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors, refer to Service Bulletin 11-042, MIL Comes On With DTC P1420 or P2000.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this warranty extension. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin. Before doing work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by doing an iN VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace both the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors.
NOTE:
To prevent a comeback, make sure you replace both of the sensors.

O2 Sensor Wrench: Snap-on YA8875 or equivalent (commercially available)

NOTE:
Do not submit a warranty claim for 2003-05 Civic Hybrid PZEV (KL) vehicles. These models are not affected by this warranty extension.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Replace the secondary heated oxygen sensor:
^ Disconnect the secondary heated oxygen sensor 4P connector.
^ Using the 02 sensor wrench, remove the oxygen sensor.
^ Install the replacement oxygen sensor, and torque it to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).
^ Reconnect the 4P connector.
2. Replace the third heated oxygen sensor:
^ Disconnect the third heated oxygen sensor 4P connector.
^ Using the 02 sensor wrench, remove the oxygen sensor.
^ Install the replacement oxygen sensor, and torque it to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).
^ Reconnect the 4P connector.
