MIL Comes On With DTC P1420 or P2000
SYMPTOM
The MIL comes on with one of the following DTCs:
^ 2003 models - DTC P1420 (NOx Adsorptive Catalytic System Efficiency Below Threshold)
^ 2004-05 models - DTC P2000 (NOx Adsorptive Catalytic System Efficiency Below Threshold)
PROBABLE CAUSE
The secondary heated oxygen sensor is deteriorated, and the PGM-FI software misinterprets its input as a deteriorated NOx adsorptive three-way catalytic converter and sets DTC P1420 or P2000.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace both the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors.
NOTE:
To prevent a comeback, make sure you replace both of the sensors.

NOTE:
The warranty on the oxygen sensors has been extended to 8 years from the original date of purchase or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. For more information, see Service Bulletin 11-044, Warranty Extension: Secondary and Third Heated Oxygen Sensors.
TOOL INFORMATION
O2 Sensor Wrench: Snap-on YA8875 or equivalent
(commercially available)

DIAGNOSIS
1. Check for DTCs.
Is DTC P1420 or P2000 stored?
Yes - Go to step 2.
No - This bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.
2. Check the iN VIN status inquiry to see if Service
Bulletin 11-043, Product Update: ECM Update to
Improve DTC P1420 and P2000 Detection
Threshold, was done.
Was the product update completed?
Yes - Go to step 3.
No - Do the product update, then go to step 3.
3. Check if the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors were recently replaced.
Were the secondary and third heated oxygen sensors recently replaced?
Yes - This bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.
No - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Replace the secondary heated oxygen sensor:
SECONDARY H028 44 N.m (33 lb-ft)
^ Disconnect the secondary heated oxygen sensor 4P connector.
^ Using the 02 sensor wrench, remove the oxygen sensor.
^ Install the replacement oxygen sensor, and torque it to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).
^ Reconnect the 4P connector.
2. Replace the third heated oxygen sensor:
^ Disconnect the third heated oxygen sensor 4P connector.
^ Using the 02 sensor wrench, remove the oxygen sensor.
^ Install the replacement oxygen sensor, and torque it to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).
^ Reconnect the 4P connector.
