Rattle or Buzz from Rear of Vehicle, Exhaust Tips Misaligned with Bumper

SYMPTOM

A rattling or buzzing sound comes from the rear of the vehicle, and the tips of the exhaust pipes may not be aligned with the rear bumper cutouts.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, and muffler were misaligned during assembly.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Reposition the exhaust system.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

2. Remove the heat shield covering the catalytic converter.

3. Remove the six exhaust nuts that hold the three- way catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe and muffler.

NOTE:
The exhaust system may be hot. Be sure to wear gloves or give all the components time to cool before doing this procedure.





4. Remove the three-way catalytic converter, and replace the front and rear gaskets. Reinstall the converter, and install six new self-locking exhaust nuts finger-tight.

5. Make sure the tips of the exhaust pipes are level and aligned with the rear bumper cutouts. Adjust as needed.

NOTE:
It may help to have a second technician gently shake and pull down on the exhaust pipes so the system is not binding and is fully resting on the rubber mounting brackets.





6. Torque the six self-locking exhaust nuts on the three-way catalytic converter to 33.9 Nm (25 lb-ft.)

7. Check the rear of the vehicle to make sure the exhaust pipe tips are aligned with the bumper cutouts, and neither exhaust pipe is higher or lower than the other.

8. If the exhaust pipe tips are properly aligned with the bumper cutouts, reinstall the heat shield that covers the catalytic converter.

9. Lower the vehicle.
