Recall - Rear Window/Quarter Glass Looseness: Overview
06-069September 16, 2006
Applies To:
2006 Civic 2-Door - From VIN 2HGFG1...6H501169 thru 2HGFG1...6H503839
Safety Recall: Rear Window or Quarter Glass Rattle or Looseness
BACKGROUND
Because of improper window opening preparation, the quarter glass windows and the rear window may not be properly adhered to the body. While driving, this can cause the rear window and/or either quarter glass to become loose, to rattle, to lift up, or to separate from the body, increasing the safety hazard to traffic.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign. An example of the customer notification is shown in this service bulletin.
Only about 900 vehicles within the affected VIN range actually have the window problem. Before working on a vehicle, you must verify its eligibility by checking at least one of these items:
^ The customer has a notification letter.
^ The vehicle is shown on your campaign responsibility report.
^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.
In addition to these verification items, check for a punch mark below the third character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.
A few of the vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new car inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before they are sold or leased. To see if a vehicle is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Remove, reseal, and reinstall the rear window and both quarter glass windows.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
If you sublet this repair to an auto glass shop, make sure they have a copy of this procedure.
1. To ensure proper alignment for reinstallation, apply tape to each side of the quarter glass and the body as shown.
2. Remove the front seal from the front edge of the quarter glass. If needed, cut the front seal with a utility knife.
3. Remove the quarter glass with a pull-handle type windshield removal tool:
NOTE:
On some vehicles with poorly adhered glass, the initial cut you make into the adhesive is enough to release the glass and adhesive from the body.
^ From outside the vehicle, lift the thin weatherstrip at the top corner of the glass, then insert the tool's blade into the adhesive, between the glass and the body. Do not allow the blade to scratch the body.
^ Carefully cut through the adhesive, first along the top of the glass, then along the front of the glass, and finally, along the bottom of the glass.
NOTE:
Because the adhesive is recessed from the corners of the glass, you may need to cut through the corners with a longer blade, or cut the corners from inside the vehicle. Be careful not to scratch the body with the blade.
^ Carefully lift the glass out of the window opening.
4. Inspect the molding attached to the quarter glass. If any of the molding is damaged, use a new quarter glass.
5. Check the glass positioning clips. If either clip is damaged, remove both clips, prime the body around the clip holes, then fill the holes with adhesive. (The clips are not required for reinstalling the glass.)
6. Clean the body flange around the window opening with isopropyl alcohol.
7. Make sure the adhesive around the entire window opening is securely glued to the body by pulling it and by rolling it side-to-side.
NOTE:
In most cases of adhesive primer failure, the entire bead of adhesive sticks to the quarter glass.
^ If the adhesive is still secured to the body, go to step 9.
^ If any area of the adhesive has pulled away from the body, go to step 8.
8. Clean and prime the window opening using the replacement adhesive's instructions.
9. If you scratched the body while removing the glass, apply touch-up paint to the scratched areas.
10. Install a new front seal onto the quarter glass.
11. Reinstall the quarter glass using the replacement adhesive's instructions. If you are installing a new quarter glass, prime it according to those instructions.
12. Repeat steps 1 thru 11 on the opposite side.
13. Remove the window antenna terminal cover, then disconnect the antenna connector.
14. Disconnect the rear window defogger connectors.
15. Remove the rear window with a pull-handle type windshield removal tool:
NOTE:
On some vehicles, your initial cut into the adhesive is enough to release the window and adhesive from the body.
^ At the top edge of the glass, insert the tool's blade into the adhesive, between the glass and the body. Do not allow the blade to scratch the body.
^ Carefully cut through the adhesive, first along the top of the glass, then along each side of the glass, and finally, along the bottom of the glass.
NOTE:
Because the adhesive is recessed from the bottom of the window, you may need to cut through the bottom with a longer blade, or cut the bottom from inside the vehicle. Be careful not to scratch the body with the blade.
^ Carefully lift the glass out of the window opening.
16. Clean the body flange around the window opening with isopropyl alcohol.
17. Make sure the adhesive around the entire window opening is securely glued to the body by pulling it and by rolling it side-to-side.
NOTE:
In most cases of adhesive primer failure, the entire bead of adhesive sticks to the window.
^ If the adhesive is still secure, go to step 19.
^ If any area of the adhesive has pulled away from the body, go to step 18.
18. Clean and prime the window opening using the replacement adhesive's instructions.
19. If you scratched the body while removing the window, apply touch-up paint to the scratched areas.
20. Attach the lower molding (lower dam) to the bottom of the window, then reinstall the window using the replacement adhesive's instructions. If you are installing a new rear window, prime it according to those instructions.
21. Reconnect the rear window defogger connectors and the antenna connector. Reinstall the antenna terminal cover.
22. Let the adhesive cure according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.
23. Center-punch a completion mark below the third character of the engine compartment VIN:
^ Slide open the FRAME NUMBER door on the center cowl cover.
^ Use a long punch to reach the VIN.
