DTC Troubleshooting
DTC P0705: Short in Transmission Range Switch Circuit (Multiple Shift-position Input)NOTE:
^ Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review General Troubleshooting Information.
^ This code is caused by an electrical circuit problem and cannot be caused by a mechanical problem in the transmission.
1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
3. Start the engine.
4. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all positions. Stop for at least 1 second in each position.
5. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P0705 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate FAILED?
YES - Go to step 6.
NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for intermittent short to body ground in the wires between the transmission range switch and the PCM. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 3.
6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
7. Inspect the transmission range switch.
Is the switch OK?
YES - Go to step 8.
NO - Replace the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
8. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
9. Shift to any position other than P.
10. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C17 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 17.
NO - Go to step 11.
11. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
12. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
13. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P),
14. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C17 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C17 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 15.
15. Disconnect PCM connectors B (24P) and E (31P).
16. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal B15 and body ground, and between PCM connector terminal E3 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 66.
NO - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminals B15, E3, and ground (G101, G102), or repair poor ground (G101, G102), then go to step 59.
17. Shift to any position other than R.
18. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C11 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 23.
NO - Go to step 19.
19. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
20. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
21. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
22. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C11 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C11 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
23. Shift to any position other than N.
24. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals B23 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 29.
NO - Go to step 25.
25. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
26. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
27. Disconnect PCM connector B (24P).
28. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal B23 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal B23 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
29. Shift to any position other than D.
30. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C10 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 35.
NO - Go to step 31.
31. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
32. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
33. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
34. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C10 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C10 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
35. Shift to any position other than D3.
36. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C18 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 41.
NO - Go to step 37.
37. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
38. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
39. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
40. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C18 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C18 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
41. Shift to any position other than 2.
42. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C2 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 47.
NO - Go to step 43.
43. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
44. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
45. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
46. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C2 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C2 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
47. Shift to any position other than 1.
48. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C9 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 53.
NO - Go to step 49.
49. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
50. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
51. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
52. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C9 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C9 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
53. Shift to any position other than D, D3, or 2.
54. Measure voltage between PCM connector terminals C19 and E3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 66.
NO - Go to step 55.
55. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
56. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
57. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
58. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C19 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C19 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 59.
NO - Go to step 66.
59. Reconnect all connectors.
60. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
61. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
62. Start the engine.
63. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all position. Stop for at least 1 second in each position.
64. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0705 indicated?
YES - Check for intermittent short to body ground in the wire between the transmission range switch and the PCM, then go to step 1.
NO - Go to step 65.
65. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P0705 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES - Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs were indicated in step 64, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO - If the screen indicates FAILED, check for intermittent short to body ground in the wire between the transmission range switch and the PCM, then go to step 1. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 62.
66. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known good PCM.
67. Start the engine.
68. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all position. Stop for at least 1 second in each position.
69. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0705 indicated?
YES - Check for intermittent short to body ground in the wire between the transmission range switch and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM, then go to step 67. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1.
NO - Go to step 70.
70. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P0705 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM. If any other DTCs were indicated in step 69, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO - If the screen indicates FAILED, check for intermittent short to body ground in the wire between the transmission range switch and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known good PCM, then go to step 67. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 67.
