REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.
2. Shift into N.
3. Remove the nut securing the shift cable end, then separate the cable end from the shift lever.
4. Rotate the socket holder on the shift cable a quarter turn; the tab on the socket holder will be in the opening of the shift lever bracket base. Then slide the holder to remove the shift cable from the shift lever bracket base.
5. Remove the three way catalytic converter (TWC) heat shield.
6. Remove the shift cable bracket and the grommet, then pull the shift cable out through the hole in the body.
7. Remove the shift cable cover, then remove the shift cable holder.
8. Pry up the lock tab of the lock washer, and remove the lock bolt and the lock washer, then separate the shift cable from the selector control shaft.
9. Insert the new shift cable through the grommet hole, and install the grommet in its hole.
NOTE:
Do not bend the new shift cable excessively.
10. Install the shift cable bracket, and torque the nuts to 12 N.m (8.7 lb-ft).
11. Install the control lever over the selector control shaft. Secure the control lever with a new lock washer, and torque the lock bolt to 14 N.m (10 lb-ft), then bend the lock tab of the lock washer against the bolt head.
12. Install the shift cable holder, then install the new shift cable cover.
13. Install the TWC heat shield.
14. Push the shift cable until it stops. Pull the shift cable back two steps so that the shift position is in N.
NOTE:
Do not push the shift cable by holding the shift cable guide.
15. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the N indicator comes on.
16. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
17. Insert a 6.0 mm (0.24 in.) pin through the positioning hole on the shift lever to secure the shift lever in N.
18. Align the socket holder on the shift cable with the slot in the bracket base, then slide the holder into the base. Install the shift cable end over the mounting stud by aligning its square hole with the square fitting at the bottom of the stud. Rotate the holder a quarter4urn to secure the shift cable.
NOTE:
Do not install the shift cable by twisting the shift cable guide.
19. Check that the shift cable end is properly installed on the mounting stud.
20. Install the nut, and torque it to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).
21. Remove the 6 mm pin from the shift lever.
22. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and move the shift lever to each position. Check that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
23. Push the shift lock release, and check that the shift lever releases. Then check that the shift lever locks into P.
24. Reinstall the center console:
^ Check if the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, and if necessary, replace them with new ones.
^ Make sure the wire harness is not pinched.
^ Make sure each connector is plugged in properly.
^ Set the rib under the pocket onto the parking brake lever bracket correctly.
