2007-08 Fit: MIL Comes On With DTC P0420
(Supersedes 10-015, dated March 23, 2010, to update the information marked by asterisks)
REVISION SUMMARY
* Under WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION, the flat rate time was changed because the MVCI updates control modules more efficiently.*
SYMPTOM
The MIL is on, and DIG P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) is stored.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The ECM/PCM misinterprets engine idle conditions, resulting in inaccurate control of the fuel and ignition.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the catalytic converter, and update the PGM-FI software with the HDS.
PARTS INFORMATION

SOFTWARE INFORMATION
HDS Software Version:
2.021.016 (March 2010) or later.
Control Module (CM) Update:
Database Update 12-FEB-2010 or later.
NOTE:
To avoid an incorrect repair that would not be covered under warranty, use the software version listed above or a later version.
The updated PGM-FI software program IDs and P/Ns are shown below. If the HDS is loaded with the latest software, and it displays No Update Needed during the update, the software for this service bulletin is already installed.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
The normal warranty applies.
Failed Part: P/N 18160-RME-A00
Defect Code: 01102
Symptom Code: 03203
Skill Level: Repair Technician
DIAGNOSIS
Use the HDS to read the stored DTC(s):
^ If P0420 is the only DTC, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^ If other DTCs are stored along with P0420, troubleshoot the other DTCs first. Failure of other parts can contribute to catalytic converter problems and cause it to fail again. After you troubleshoot the other DTCs, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
The illustrations for center console removal show the M/T model; the A/T model is similar.
1. Remove the parking brake cover lid. On M/T models, remove the shift knob.
2. Remove the center console:
^ Remove the screws and the front clips.
^ Lift up the rear of the console to detach the middle clip, and pull the console rearward to release the front hook from the heater unit.
^ Disconnect the accessory socket connector and the auxiliary jack connector (if equipped).
3. Remove the passenger's heater duct from the heater unit.
4. Disconnect the secondary H028 connector; it's located under the center console, above the shift lever.
5. Remove the secondary H028 from the catalytic converter.
6. Remove the catalytic converter:
^ Disconnect the front pipe by removing the two flexible joint bolts. The bolts will not be reused; the bolt springs will be reused.
^ Disconnect exhaust pipe B from the catalytic converter by removing the three self-locking nuts. The nuts will not be reused.
^ Remove the catalytic converter along with its front gasket (flexible gasket) and its rear gasket (pre-chamber gasket). The gaskets will not be reused.
7. Transfer the covers from the original catalytic converter to the new one. Torque the cover bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
8. Install the new catalytic converter with new front and rear gaskets, new self-locking nuts, and new flexible joint bolts. Torque the self-locking nuts to 33 N.m (24 lb-ft); torque the flexible joint bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).
9. Reinstall the secondary H028, and torque it to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).
10. Reconnect the secondary H028 connector.
11. Reinstall the passenger's heater duct.
12. Reinstall the center console. Make sure that the wire harness is not pinched, all the connectors are reconnected, and the console is properly installed onto the parking lever bracket. Replace any damaged trim clips.
13. Reinstall the parking brake cover lid and the shift knob (M/T models).
14. Update the PGM-FI software with the HDS. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/ Modules.
