Warm the engine up to full operating temperature (until the radiator fan comes on twice). Turn on the NC to max cold and the blower speed to low:

^ If you hear a whistle coming from the passenger's side vent, replace the expansion valve.

^ If you don't hear a whistle, this bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Start the engine, turn on the A/C, and let the engine idle for 5 minutes.

2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then recover the refrigerant:

^ Refer to page 21-73 in the 2000-2008 S2000 Service Manua4 or

^ Online, enter keyword RECOVERY, and select A/C Refrigerant Recovery from the list.

3. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio system, then write down the audio presets.

4. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

5. Remove the three forward heat shield bolts, and loosen the bolt at the rear. Move the heat shield out of the way.

6. Pull out the grommets, then carefully separate the upper grommet from the lower grommet by releasing the locktabs.

7. Remove the 6 x 30 mm bolt securing the two NC lines to the expansion valve.

8. Move the lines out of the way, and cap the open fittings.

9. Remove the two 5 x 40 mm socket head bolts.

10. Insert a 6 x 30 mm or longer bolt into the middle of the expansion valve, and gently withdraw it.

11. Apply a light coat of refrigerant oil to the two new 0-rings (8 mm on the right side, and 5/8 inch on the left side), then install them onto the evaporator fittings.

12. Install the expansion valve with the socket head bolts. Torque the bolts to 3.2 N.m (2.4 lb-ft).

13. Apply a light coat of refrigerant oil to the two new 0-rings (8 mm on the right side, and 5/8 inch on the left side), then install them into the receiver/suction lines. Bolt the lines into the expansion valve, and torque the bolt to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

14. Reinstall the heat shield.

15. Connect the negative cable to the battery.

16. Charge the system with refrigerant (see page 21-75 of the service manual).

17. Do the ECM idle learn procedure:

^ 2000-05 models, refer to page 11-140 in the service manual; 2006-08 models, refer to page 11-462 in the service manual.

^ Online, enter keyword LEARN, and select ECM Idle Learn Procedure from the list.

18. Enter the anti-theft code for the audio system, then enter the audio presets.

19. Warm the engine up to full operating temperature (until the radiator comes on twice). Turn on the A/C to max cold and blower speed to low, and verify that the noise is gone.
