Campaign - Warranty Extension, Hood Paint Cracking
12-049August 24, 2012
Applies To:
2006-10 Civic - Check the iN VIN status for eligibility
Warranty Extension: Civic Hood Paint Cracking
BACKGROUND
On some 2006-10 Civics that are painted blue (paint code B-529P) or black (paint codes B-92P and NH-731P), the exterior paint on the hood and the leading edge of the front fenders may crack. American Honda is extending the warranty on the paint on the hood and tops of the front fenders on affected vehicles to 7 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limit.
If this extended warranty has already expired based on the original date of purchase, American Honda is further extending the warranty 6 months from the mailing date of the notification letter. Do an iN VIN status inquiry to see if the customer is eligible. American Honda will update this bulletin and the iN VIN status when this warranty extension on all early production vehicles has expired.
This warranty extension only applies to factory-applied paint.
The warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state's law.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this warranty extension. An example of the customer notification is included at the end of this service bulletin.
Before doing work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by doing an iN VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, repaint the hood and the tops of both front fenders with an isocyanate 2-part color and clearcoat paint.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Check the paint code label on the driver's door to make sure the paint code is one of the following:
^ B-529P - blue
^ B-92P - black
^ NH-731P - black
2. Clean the vehicle, then bring it inside a shop with overhead lighting. Do not try to inspect the vehicle in sunlight as the sun's intensity may affect the ability to see any potential damage.
3. Inspect the hood and the tops of the front fenders for cracking paint. The cracks are usually 3-5 millimeters long and often have three legs and/or a small dot at the intersection as shown below.
^ If the cracking appears like the following, even if it is only on a small area of the hood and the tops of the fenders, go to step 4.
^ If the damage does not look like the above examples but looks like one of the following, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to the standard warranty paint procedure.
4. You must measure the paint thickness in the three areas listed with a magnetic pull-off gauge or an electronic paint thickness gauge to make sure it was applied by the factory. Write down the results on the repair order because they will be needed to submit a warranty claim.
NOTE:
Due to supply limitations, it may take a few months for Special Tools to send magnetic pull-off gauges to every dealership. If you do not have a gauge to measure the paint thickness, it will be necessary for you to borrow one from your dealer body shop or the independent body shop you send work to. The paint thickness measurements are required for each warranty claim.
^ If the paint thickness is between 4 and 5 mil (100 to 125 microns), go to the REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^ If the paint thickness is more than 6 mil (150 microns), the paint may not be factory paint. Contact your DPSM and get their approval before going to the REPAIR PROCEDURE.
