REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the center console panel.

^ Open the center pocket lids and the center console armrest.

^ Hold the center pocket lids, and gently pull them up to detach the front clips.

^ Detach the clips and the hook along the edge of the panel.

^ Pry up on the rear corner edges of the console box trim with the appropriate trim tool to detach the clips, and pull up the panel to detach the clip.

^ Disconnect the front accessory power socket connector. On vehicles with front seat heaters, disconnect the driver's seat heater switch connector and the front passenger's seat heater switch connector.

2. Pry off the selector lever knob cover with the appropriate trim tool. Remove the two screws, and lift the shifter lever knob off the lever.

3. Look at the position of the tabs on the gear position indicator panel. If the tabs are on the front and rear, the vehicle has a type A shift lever; if they're on the sides, the vehicle has a type B shift lever. For type A, do steps 4, 5, and 6. For type B, do steps 7 and 8.

4. Type A Shift Lever: Pull the A/T gear position indicator panel and base up and off the shift lever.

5. Type A shift lever: Turn the panel and base over, and remove the A/T gear position indicator light bulb socket. Remove the wiring from under the clips.

6. Type A shift lever: Carefully pry the tabs to separate the A/T gear position indicator panel from the base. Go to step 9.

NOTE:
Doing this step in warmer temperatures helps to prevent the tabs from breaking.

7. Type B shift lever: Remove the A/T gear position indicator panel by gently prying up on the four retaining tabs that secure the panel to the base.

NOTE:
Doing this step in warmer temperatures helps to prevent the tabs from breaking.

8. Type B shift lever: Remove the A/T gear position indicator panel light bulb socket, then remove the indicator panel from the base.

9. Cut four 8 mm x 18 mm pieces of wool felt, and wrap them around the four retaining tabs on the gear position indicator panel to prevent the tabs from sliding during installation.

10. Type B shift lever: Carefully reinstall the indicator panel onto the base.

11. Type A shift lever: Reinstall the A/T gear position indicator panel and base.

12. Reinstall the shift lever knob, and tighten the screws.

13. Reinstall the shift lever knob cover by snapping it into place.

14. Inspect the felt on the center console panel for proper installation. Make sure the felt is properly attached and in the correct position (touching the parting line). If any of the felt is not in contact with the console panel, or is not touching the parting line, replace it by cutting a 200 mm x 5 mm piece of felt and applying it as shown.

15. Reconnect all connectors, replace any damaged clips, and reinstall the center console panel.

16. Test-drive the vehicle, and make sure the squeak is gone.
