Popping Noise From the Front Seat-back

SYMPTOM
There is a popping or clicking coming from the back of the driver's or passenger's front seat, or movement inside the seat can be felt when leaning against the seat-back.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The top lumbar spring has come out of its holder.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Remove the upper lumbar spring from the seat-back, straighten it out, and then reinstall it.

DIAGNOSIS

Sitting in the affected front seat, push back and forth with your feet while leaning against the seat-back.

Is there a popping or clicking noise coming from the seat-back, or can you feel movement within the seat-back?

Yes - Go REPAIR PROCEDURE.

No - This bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE





1. Unhook the elastic strap, then unzip the seat-back cover and flip it over the head restraint.





2. While wearing work gloves, detach either end of the upper lumbar spring by pushing up on the bottom of the spring, then remove the spring from the seat-back.





3. Grab the lumbar spring with both hands at the two bottom center bends, then bend the ends up to straighten out the spring.





4. Reinstall the spring in the seat-back. Make sure the center of the spring fits in the holder.





5. Reinstall the seat-back cover, zipping it back on and reattaching the elastic strap.

6. Sit against the seat-back, and push back and forth to recheck the seat for noise.
