Symptom Code: 04201

Skill Level: Repair Technician

DIAGNOSIS

1. Test-drive the vehicle on a rough road to confirm where the noise is coming from.

^ If the noise is coming from the rear jack point area, see Service Bulletin 10-019, Popping or Clicking From the Left Hear or Right Hear Jack Point

^ If the noise is coming from the rear shelf, open the trunk, look through the hole next to the trunk light, and check the rear shelf's middle mounting hook for felt tape. If there is no felt tape, see Service Bulletin 08-083, Hear Shelf Rattles When the Vehicle Is Driven on Rough Roads.

^ If the noise is not coming from the mounting hook or the jacking point, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Locate the bolts on the left and right sides of the rear bulkhead.

NOTE:
You may need to push down on the trunk trim to find the bolts.

2. Remove each rear bulkhead bolt, one at a time, then test-drive the vehicle:

^ If the noise is gone, go to step 3.

^ If you still hear the noise, go to step 8.

3. Check if the bracket extensions near the rear bulkhead bolts are touching the washers.

^ If the bracket extensions are touching the washers, remove the bolts. Then use a hammer and a flat tip screwdriver to pry up on the bracket extensions. Continue bending the edge of the bracket extensions 90 degrees using pliers, so they don't touch the washers. Go to step 4.

^ If the bracket extensions are not touching the washers, remove the bolts, then go to step 4.

4. Check the bolt hole alignment:

^ If the holes cover the threads, grind out a small portion of the wheel house extension hole so the bolt threads don't touch the edge of the hole. Go to step 5.

^ If the holes don't cover the threads, go to step 8.

5. Apply touch-up paint to the areas that you ground down.

6. Install new bolts into the through hole, and torque them to 22 N.m (16 lb.-ft.).

7. If the new bolts or washers touch the bracket extensions, repeat step 3.

8. With the rear bulkhead bolts installed, place a screwdriver between the metal panels as shown, and separate them, making sure a gap is created.

*9. Spray motorcycle chain lube between the panels.*

10. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the noise is gone. If you still hear the noise, continue with normal troubleshooting (refer to ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION).

ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION

The remaining illustrations show areas that can cause squeaking in the rear shelf area. Use a hammer and screwdriver to pry apart the metal panels, then spray motorcycle chain lube between the panels.
