Symptom Troubleshooting
Symptom Troubleshooting: USB device does not function
USB device does not function (without navigation)
NOTE:
- Check the vehicle battery condition first. Testing and Inspection
- Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.
- Make sure you have the customer's USB device to use for testing.
- Not all players and player functions work with the USB adapter. Always test the customers USB device in a known-good vehicle of the same year and trim (if possible). Technologies change and are updated frequently which may result in that USB devices may work in newer vehicles, but not in older vehicles of the same model.
- Make sure that the music player connected to the USB port works properly.
- The USB memory used for testing should conform to the USB mass storage class standard.
- The USB function is not compatible with a USB memory of 128 MB or less.
- The music must be saved to the player as WMA (Windows Media Audio) files or MP3. MP3 files saved in a variable bit rate are not compatible.
- If UNSUPPORTED appears on the display, the vehicle is OK, there is a software problem with the USB device.
1. Connect a known-good music player to the USB port.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
3. Press the AUX button, and check if it changes to USB mode.
Does it change to the USB mode?
YES - Go to step 4.
NO - Go to step 18.
4. Check that the customer's USB memory device functions properly when it is connected to a known-good vehicle.
Does the device work properly?
YES - Go to step 5.
NO - If the USB port is OK, the music player or the music device cable is either defective or incompatible.
5. Return to the customer's vehicle with the customer's USB memory device, and check if NO DATA appears when the music player is connected to the USB port.
Does NO DATA appear?
YES - Go to step 6.
NO - Go to step 10.
6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
7. Check the connectors at USB adapter unit connector B (5P), the USB adapter cable, and the USB adapter.
Are the connectors and terminals connected properly?
YES - Go to step 8.
NO - Repair the connection, and recheck.
8. Disconnect USB adapter unit connector B (5P).
9. Check for continuity between terminals of USB adapter connector B (5P) and the USB adapter 5P connector according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Replace the USB adapter unit. USB Adapter Unit Replacement
NO - There is an open in the wire(s) between the USB adapter unit and the USB adapter. Replace the affected shielded harness.
10. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
11. Check that the audio unit connectors and the USB adapter unit connectors properly connected.
Are the connectors properly connected?
YES - Go to step 12.
NO - Connect the connectors, and recheck.
12. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 1.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 13.
NO - Repair an open in the wire between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit.
13. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
14. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 11.
Is there less than 0.2 V?
YES - Go to step 15.
NO - Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit.
15. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
16. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 2.
Is there 10 V or more present?
YES - Go to step 18.
NO - Go to step 17.
17. Measure the voltage between body ground and audio unit connector E (14P) terminal No. 2.
Is there 10 V or more present?
YES - Repair an open or short in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit.
NO - Substitute a known-good audio unit, Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation, With Audio) and recheck. If 10 V or more are present, replace the original audio unit.
18. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
19. Measure the voltage between body ground and audio unit connector E (14P) terminal No. 2.
Is there 2.0 V or more present?
YES - Substitute a known-good audio unit, Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation, With Audio) and recheck. If less than 2.0 V are present, replace the original audio unit.
NO - Go to step 20.
20. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
21. Disconnect audio unit connector E (14P) and USB adapter unit connector A (14P).
22. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector E (14P) terminals No. 9 and No. 10 individually.
Is there continuity?
YES - There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 23.
23. Check for continuity between the terminals of audio unit connector E (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity between any of the terminals?
YES - There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
NO - Go to step 24.
24. Check for continuity between the terminals of audio unit connector E (14P) and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) according to the table.
Is there continuity?
YES - Substitute a known-good USB adapter unit, USB Adapter Unit Replacement then reconnect all of the connectors and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original USB adapter unit. If the symptom/indication is still present, replace the audio unit. Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation, With Audio)
NO - There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the USB adapter unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
