Product Update: Roof Molding Is Loose

(Supersedes 12-001, dated January 5, 2012, to revise the information marked by the black bars and asterisks)

*REVISION SUMMARY

Under WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION, the two repair operations were separated and a Template ID was added.*

BACKGROUND

In high winds, the roof molding may lift in the middle, allowing either its front or rear retention clip to come loose.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

In addition, check for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Apply Konishi Bond adhesive to the front and rear retaining pins on the body. If a roof molding is damaged or missing, install a new one.

NOTE:
Replacement roof moldings do not require the use of Konishi Bond adhesive due to retention clip improvements.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Apply protective tape to the body.

2. Using the appropriate trim tool, pull up and slide the roof molding rearward to release the front bracket from the pin on the body.

3. Inspect the front bracket.

^ If the bracket comes off the roof molding or the molding is damaged, install a new roof molding without adhesive, then go to step 10.

^ If the bracket is OK, go to step 4.

4. Pull up the front portion of the molding.

5. At the rear of the molding, pull up and release the rear bracket from the pin.

6. Inspect the rear bracket.

^ If the bracket comes off the roof molding or the molding is damaged, install a new molding without adhesive, then go to step 10.

^ If the bracket is OK, go to step 7.

7. Clean the front and rear pins on the body, and the front and rear portion of the roof molding using a shop towel dampened in water.

NOTE:
Do not use any chemical cleaner as it may damage the paint.

8. Apply a 50 mm bead of Konishi Bond to the front and rear pins as shown until the pins on the body are completely covered.

9. Reinstall the roof molding immediately after applying the Konishi Bond.

NOTE:
The Konishi Bond adhesive can skin within seconds of exposure to atmosphere. Apply the roof molding immediately after applying the adhesive to ensure proper adhesion.

10. Repeat steps 1 thru 9 for the other roof molding.

11. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
