DTC Troubleshooting: P0721
DTC P0721 : Output Shaft (Countershaft) Speed Sensor (Range/Performance)
NOTE:
* Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot with the HDS, and review the General Troubleshooting Information How To Troubleshoot The A/T System.
* This code is caused by an electrical circuit problem and cannot be caused by a mechanical problem in the transmission.
1. DTC check:
DTC check
-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-3. Block the rear wheels and raise the front of the vehicle, or raise the vehicle on a lift. Make sure it is securely supported, and allow the front wheels to rotate freely.
-4. Start the engine, disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF button, run the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and keep the vehicle speed at speeds over 12 mph (20 km/h) for at least 10 seconds. Slow down, and stop the wheels.
-5. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0723 indicated?
-YES- Do the troubleshooting for DTC P0723.
-NO- Go to step 2.
2. Problem verification:

-1. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0721 indicated?
-YES- The failure is duplicated. Go to step 3.
-NO- Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
3. Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connection check:

Are the connection and installation OK?
-YES- The connection and installation are OK. Replace the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor Output Shaft (Countershaft) Speed Sensor Removal and Installation, then do the repair verification.
-NO- Repair faulty connection or installation, then do the repair verification.
Repair verification procedure:
-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
-2. Clear the DTC with HDS.
-3. Start the engine, disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF button, run the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and keep the vehicle speed at speeds over 12 mph (20 km/h) for at least 10 seconds. Slow down, and stop the wheels.
-4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0721 indicated?
-YES- Go to step 1.
-NO- Troubleshooting is complete.
