Product Update: Rear Spring Upper Mounting Cushion Is Not Properly Installed

BACKGROUND

During assembly, the rear spring upper mounting cushion was not properly aligned.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Not all vehicles within the affected VIN ranges are affected by this campaign. To verify vehicle eligibility, you must check for at least one of these items:

^ The customer has a notification letter.

^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.

In addition, check for a punch mark above the 1st character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.

Should a dealership sell an unrepaired vehicle that subsequently causes an injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this campaign. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Inspect and, if necessary, reinstall the rear spring upper mounting cushion.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Raise the vehicle on a lift, and inspect the rear spring upper mounting cushion on both sides of the vehicle.

^ If the rear spring upper mounting cushions are OK, the vehicle is OK. Go to step 13 of REPAIR PROCEDURE A to punch the VIN.

^ If the rear spring upper mounting cushion is not properly set, but the spring is NOT touching the body, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A.

^ If the rear upper spring upper mounting cushion is not properly set, and the spring IS touching the body, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B.

REPAIR PROCEDURE A

1. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until you start to compress the spring.

2. Remove the bolt from the brake line bracket to relieve the tension on the brake line and ABS harness.

3. Remove the lower damper bolt.

4. Lower the floor jack to allow the rear suspension to hang freely.

5. Using a brush, apply silicone paste between the vehicle body and the rear spring upper mounting cushion.

NOTE:
Do not get any paste on the spring.

6. With the help of one or two assistants, pull down on the wheel to expand the spring.

7. While the assistant pulls the wheel down, use a screwdriver wrapped with tape to reseat the rear spring upper mounting cushion.

8. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until the trailing arm and damper holes are aligned.

9. Install a new lower damper bolt, and torque it to 60 N.m (44 lbf-ft).

10. Reinstall the brake line bracket bolt.

11. Check that the rear spring upper mounting cushion is properly seated between the vehicle body and the spring.

12. Check that the rear spring lower mounting seat and spring are properly seated by making sure the cushion is still attached to the trailing arm and the three tabs are properly seated.

13. Center-punch a completion mark above the 1st character of the engine compartment VIN:

REPAIR PROCEDURE B

1. Remove the rear spring. Refer to the Rear Spring Removal and Installation procedure on ISIS.

2. Inspect the rear spring mounting area where the spring contacted the vehicle body. If you see any wear points, touch them up with spot primer, and allow the primer to dry.

3. Using a brush, apply silicone paste around the area of the rear spring upper mounting cushion.

4. Reinstall the rear spring. Make sure the rear spring lower mounting seat is properly seated.

5. Align the wheels.

6. Center-punch a completion mark above the 1st character of the engine compartment VIN:
