Service Information
Engine Compression Inspection
Removal
1. Warm Up The Engine
1. Warm up the engine.
2. HDS DLC - Connection
NOTE: For specific operations, refer to the user's manual that came with the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS). Make sure the HDS is loaded with the latest software.
1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
3. All Injectors Stop
1. Select ALL INJECTORS STOP in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu with the HDS.
4. Starter - Test
1. Select STARTER TEST in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu with the HDS.
5. Engine Cover
1. Remove the engine cover.
6. Ignition Coil Intake Side
1. Remove the four intake side ignition coils (A).
7. Spark Plug Intake Side
1. Remove the four intake side spark plugs (A).
Inspection
NOTE: After this inspection, you must reset PGM-FI ECU in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu with the HDS to cancel ALL INJECTORS STOP and STARTER TEST functions.
1. Engine Compression - Inspection
1. Attach the compression gauge to a spark plug hole.
NOTE: Use a compression gauge with a connecting length (between the edge and the flange) of less than 23 mm (0.9 in).
2. Step on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle fully, crank the engine with the starter motor, and measure the compression.
3. Measure the compression on the remaining cylinders.
4. If the compression is not within specifications, perform a cylinder leak down test to determine the problem area. Then check the following items, and remeasure the compression:
* Incorrect valve clearance
* Confirmation of cam timing
* Damaged or worn cam lobes
* Looseness of exhaust side spark plug
* Damaged or worn valves and seats
* Damaged cylinder head gasket
* Damaged or worn piston rings
* Damaged or worn piston and cylinder bore
5. Remove the compression gauge from the spark plug hole.
Installation
1. Spark Plug Intake Side
1. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the plug threads, and screw the plugs into the cylinder head, finger tight.
2. Tighten the plugs to the specified torque.
2. Ignition Coil Intake Side
1. Install the four intake side ignition coils (A).
3. Engine Cover
1. Install the engine cover.
4. HDS DLC - Connection
1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
3. Make sure the HDS communicates with vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
5. All Injectors Stop
1. Select PGM-FI ECU reset in the PGM-FI INSPECTION menu with the HDS to cancel ALL INJECTORS STOP and STARTER TEST.
